Linda cried.

Derek cried too. Less, but not where she could see.

Over the next few weeks, the family quietly split. Megan stopped going to Michael’s Sunday dinners. She told Derek it wasn’t just about the cookout. It was about years of watching their father steamroll everyone and pretend it was leadership.

She said, “I’m done pretending he’s right just because he’s loud.”

Brandon called me directly for the first time. We talked for 40 minutes. He told me he’d tracked down the classified intercept report two years earlier through a Freedom of Information request and a contact at the National Archives. He’d seen my name on the log.

Second Lieutenant Christina Cook. Signals intercept team. First Infantry Division. Fallujah.

He said, “I should have told the family then. I was afraid of what Dad would do.”

I told him it wasn’t his burden to carry.

He said, “It is now, because I’m alive because of you, and I let him treat you like nothing. That’s on me.”

I told Brandon the same thing I’d told Derek.

“You’re not responsible for your father’s choices. None of us are.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, “You know what the worst part is? He talks about the military all the time. My guys on the base. My contracts with the DoD. He wraps himself in it like a flag. But the one person in his family who actually served, actually bled for it, he treats like she’s invisible.”

I said, “I know.”

He said, “I’m not going to let that stand.”

Thanksgiving of 2024 was the first time in 40 years that Michael Fields hosted a holiday with fewer than 20 people at his table. It was just Michael, Linda, and one cousin’s family. Six people total.

Derek and I spent Thanksgiving in Kentucky with my father. We drove down from Augusta and stayed for four days. My father was weaker than the last time I’d seen him. Slower getting out of his chair, shorter of breath, more naps in the afternoon. But his mind was sharp and his humor was intact.
